Stocking density in broiler production is the leverage point that affects multiple welfare outcomes simultaneously: thermal comfort, leg health, air quality, behavioral expression, and litter condition all improve as density decreases. The welfare-density relationship is well-established in research. The barrier to adoption is economic: lower density means more space per bird and higher production costs. Consumer certification programs that require lower densities and pay premiums for that standard represent the market mechanism through which welfare-motivated density reduction occurs. The Better Chicken Commitment, which requires maximum 30 kg per square meter among other standards, has been adopted by many major food companies in Europe and North America.
