Commercial turkey production creates welfare problems baked in at the genetic level. The extreme growth rates required by modern breeds cause skeletal development that cannot support body mass — resulting in lameness, inability to reach food and water, and chronic musculoskeletal pain. The inability to naturally breed is a welfare indicator in itself, reflecting a body conformation incompatible with evolved behavioral needs. High stocking densities in barren indoor environments frustrate natural exploratory and social behaviors. Feather pecking and aggression, managed through beak trimming rather than addressing root causes, point to behavioral needs that commercial housing systematically fails to meet. Welfare-positive turkey production uses slower-growing heritage breeds, lower stocking densities, enrichment provision, and outdoor access. Consumer demand for higher-welfare turkey, particularly around seasonal demand peaks, can drive meaningful industry change.
