White-nose syndrome causes significant individual suffering before death. The fungus colonizes wing membranes and muzzle skin during hibernation, causing irritation that disrupts normal torpor cycles. Bats rouse abnormally frequently, burning critical fat reserves until they starve. As energy reserves fail, bats emerge from hibernation in winter temperatures unable to find food, dying slowly from hypothermia and starvation. The scale of mortality — millions of individuals over a decade — represents one of the largest wildlife disease welfare crises in recorded history. Conservation responses include cave closure to prevent human spread of the fungus, research into biological and chemical treatments, and population monitoring. The ecological consequences extend to agricultural pest control, as bats consume vast quantities of insects including crop pests. Each bat colony lost represents both individual welfare harm and ecosystem service loss.
