Stocking density is one of the most important welfare parameters in trout aquaculture. Research consistently links high densities to welfare harm, but economic pressures resist reduction.
Stocking density management in trout aquaculture directly affects individual fish welfare through multiple pathways. At high densities, trout cannot perform natural swimming behavior, must navigate a competitive crowded environment, experience elevated aggression rates that cause fin damage and injury, and are subject to compromised water quality as oxygen depletion and ammonia accumulation become harder to manage. Chronic cortisol elevation from crowding stress suppresses immune function, increasing disease susceptibility. Research clearly identifies welfare improvements below 30-40 kg/m3, but industry practice regularly exceeds these levels for economic reasons. The economic argument against density reduction is weakened by evidence that moderate density reduction improves feed conversion and reduces disease treatment costs, potentially offsetting reduced volume. Regulatory standards specifying maximum stocking density for trout — absent from current EU guidance — would create a level playing field that allows producers to reduce density without competitive disadvantage.
