Aquaculture welfare technology represents a genuinely hopeful area where welfare improvements and production efficiency increasingly align. Recirculating systems on land, while expensive to establish, eliminate the most significant welfare challenges of marine net pens: sea lice, predator exposure, harmful algal blooms, and temperature extremes. Automated welfare monitoring enables operational responses to welfare problems in real time rather than waiting for mortality events. These technologies are not yet economically viable at all production scales, but the trajectory is positive. Consumer and regulatory demand for demonstrable welfare standards is the market signal that drives adoption of welfare-positive technologies ahead of economic breakeven.
