Key design factors that determine range use include: distribution and size of pop holes (exit points), presence of shelter structures on range, tree and shrub planting that provides overhead cover reducing aerial predator fear, range gradients, and flock density. Certifications that require outdoor access without specifying range design produce widely variable welfare outcomes. The difference between a well-designed range with covered corridors, varied terrain, and vegetation, and a bare mud field adjacent to a shed, is welfare-substantial even though both meet minimum legal requirements.
