Practical welfare assessment for farmed fish is advancing rapidly as both regulatory pressure and producer interest drive tool development. Traditional welfare monitoring relied on mortality rates — a lagging indicator that captures welfare failure after harm has occurred. Modern welfare assessment uses operational indicators that can be measured during routine farm operations: external injury scoring (fin erosion, skin ulceration, eye damage), behavioral observation (abnormal swimming, surface-seeking, lethargy), and physiological measures. The SWIM index for Atlantic salmon provides a validated, standardized framework adopted by leading Norwegian producers. For other species including sea bream, catfish, and tilapia, equivalent tools are being developed through research programs. Computer vision and machine learning systems promise continuous automated monitoring that would transform farm-level welfare management from periodic inspection to real-time surveillance. These technological advances could make welfare assessment scalable to the billions of fish in commercial production.
