The shift in pig welfare science from suffering reduction to positive experience promotion reflects a maturation of the field that has practical implications. A pig that is not hungry, injured, or diseased may still have poor welfare if deprived of the stimulation, social complexity, and behavioral opportunity for positive experience. Demonstrating that pigs in enriched environments with appropriate social groupings show behavioral and cognitive indicators of positive emotional states provides a welfare goal beyond minimum standards. For the consumer, this means that certifications addressing only the negative — no gestation crates, no antibiotic growth promoters — are insufficient without also requiring the conditions for positive welfare expression.
