Research has consistently shown that extended cow-calf contact supports better welfare for both animals — calves grow faster, show more exploratory behavior, and have better immune function. Cows with extended calf contact show less distress at eventual weaning. Despite this evidence, the majority of commercial dairy operations continue rapid separation due to concerns about milk production and calf disease management. Male calf fate — immediate killing, veal production, or beef rearing — involves significant welfare trade-offs. Housing in individual hutches prevents social interaction and natural behavior. Group housing for calves, while requiring more management, supports better welfare outcomes.
