Flat-faced dog breeds including Bulldogs, Pugs, and French Bulldogs suffer from severe breathing difficulties caused by selective breeding. Welfare-driven breed reform is urgently needed.
Brachycephalic breed welfare represents a systematic animal welfare failure driven by consumer preferences for extreme facial appearance. Dogs with severe BOAS experience chronic hypoxia, sleep apnea, exercise intolerance, and heat stress. Many owners normalize their dog's respiratory sounds without recognizing them as signs of distress. Surgical intervention improves quality of life but does not restore normal respiratory function, and dogs continue breeding from surgically corrected animals, perpetuating the problem in offspring. Breed standards that reward extreme flatness directly drive welfare harms. Evidence-based breeding reform including longer snouts, wider nostrils, and open nares is the only sustainable solution.
