Scientific research has identified specific enrichment materials and strategies that effectively improve pig welfare. Moving from token compliance to meaningful enrichment implementation is the welfare challenge.
Pig enrichment science has advanced significantly, yet application in commercial farming lags considerably behind the evidence base. Legislation requiring enrichment is often interpreted through provision of chains, rubber hoses, or wooden blocks — items pigs interact with briefly before losing interest. Research consistently shows that substrates allowing rooting, foraging, and manipulation provide far greater behavioral satisfaction. The welfare concept of behavioral need prioritization helps explain why pigs continue to tail bite even when some enrichment is present — if the highest priority motivations (rooting, foraging) are unmet, stereotypic and redirected behaviors persist. Truly effective enrichment must be manipulable, destructible, changeable, and provided in sufficient quantity.
