Lions are highly social felids whose welfare in zoos depends critically on appropriate social groupings and management that reflects natural pride structure and social complexity.
Zoo lion welfare depends fundamentally on social structure management. Solitary housing of lions — still practiced at some facilities — causes significant welfare harm in this highly social species. Appropriate pride simulation requires at minimum a female-centric group, ideally with cubs at various ages. Male management is complex — breeding males must be managed carefully to prevent infanticide. Exhibit design must accommodate natural lion behavior including crepuscular activity, territorial scent marking, and group rest areas. Feeding enrichment using whole carcasses or scatter feeding engages natural foraging and competitive behavior. Space quality matters more than space quantity — complexity, substrate variety, and shelter significantly affect behavioral welfare.
