Honey bee welfare science is evolving rapidly, with research by Lars Chittka and others demonstrating that bees have cognitive complexity including basic emotional states, play behavior, and sophisticated learning. This places them at the frontier of invertebrate welfare consideration. At the colony level, management practices including migratory transportation, disease prevention failures leading to colony collapse, and routine queen culling all warrant welfare consideration. At the individual level, the question of whether billions of individual bees experience suffering during pesticide exposure, disease, or colony disturbance is scientifically open. The precautionary principle suggests that where bee colony numbers are enormous and management decisions easily modifiable, welfare considerations should inform practice.
