Feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) causes painful lower urinary tract signs in cats. Stress reduction and environmental enrichment are as important as medical treatment for this welfare-significant condition.
FIC welfare impact involves significant acute pain during episodes — urinary inflammation causes severe discomfort with each urination attempt. Cats that develop urethral blockage from crystalline material and inflammation experience progressive pain, nausea, and without treatment, kidney failure and death within 24-48 hours. The chronic recurrent nature of FIC means many cats experience repeated painful episodes interspersed with normal periods. The strong link to environmental stress — particularly indoor confinement and multi-cat tension — means that environmental management is a genuine welfare intervention rather than merely symptomatic treatment. Identifying and addressing stressors, increasing environmental complexity, and optimizing water intake can substantially reduce episode frequency and improve long-term welfare.
