Trout aquaculture welfare benefits from extensive research conducted partly because welfare improvements often align with production efficiency. Fin damage from aggression is measurable, correlates with stress, and reduces product quality — creating economic incentives alongside welfare incentives for improvement. Lower stocking densities reduce aggression and fin damage while also improving individual growth rates. Current velocity management provides natural exercise behavior while reducing aggression from spatial crowding. The trout aquaculture welfare story is one of the more positive examples in aquaculture: welfare problems are measurable, solutions are known, and production alignment creates adoption incentives that are moving the industry in a welfare-positive direction.
