African elephants are among the cognitively most complex animals on Earth. Their zoo enrichment must address their intelligence, social learning, memory, and problem-solving capabilities.
African elephant cognitive welfare requires treating them as the highly intelligent beings they demonstrably are. Enrichment programs that simply provide novel physical objects do not meet their cognitive complexity — problem-solving challenges, novel food acquisition tasks, and opportunities for social learning engage their intelligence more meaningfully. Their exceptional memory means they can learn and remember complex tasks and sequences. Keeper interaction built on positive reinforcement provides cognitive stimulation alongside health management. The social learning that young elephants naturally acquire from experienced matriarchs cannot be fully replicated in zoo groups, but provision of complex multi-generational social groups where young animals can learn from experienced adults approximates this function. Cognitive welfare for elephants ultimately requires both behavioral enrichment and appropriate social complexity.
