When logging removes forest cover, surviving trees can no longer buffer butterflies from temperature extremes, causing mass mortality during winter storms. While uncertainty exists about monarch subjective experience, billions of individuals dying from cold exposure represents potential welfare harm at enormous scale. Protection and restoration of winter colony habitat — through forest protection enforcement and illegal logging reduction — is both a conservation and potential welfare intervention.
