Sea bream (Sparus aurata) are widely farmed in Mediterranean aquaculture, but high stocking densities and crowding-induced stress raise significant welfare concerns.
Sea bream are teleost fish with well-documented stress responses and pain sensitivity. In commercial aquaculture, stocking densities frequently exceed welfare-optimal levels, resulting in chronic stress, increased disease susceptibility, and aggressive interactions that cause fin erosion and injury. The combination of crowding and poor water quality creates cumulative welfare burdens throughout a fish lifetime of 18-24 months on farm. Welfare-focused producers are beginning to adopt lower densities and improved monitoring protocols.
