Welfare Considerations

Rabbit farming welfare is among the most neglected areas of farm animal policy, partly because rabbits are perceived as less emotionally significant than pigs or cows. Yet they are social, cognitively active animals with strong behavioral drives that are completely thwarted in conventional battery cages. The inability to dig, hide, stand fully upright, or socialize causes chronic behavioral frustration. Wire floors cause foot sores that are frequently undertreated. EU welfare reforms moving toward enriched collective housing represent progress, but implementation is slow and enforcement inconsistent.
