Emerging research on the canine gut microbiome reveals connections between diet, gut health, and behavioral and physical welfare in companion dogs.
The gut-brain connection in dogs has welfare implications that are only beginning to be understood. A healthy, diverse microbiome appears to support both physical health and emotional resilience in dogs. Factors that disrupt microbiome health — highly processed diets, overuse of antibiotics, chronic stress — may contribute to welfare-negative states including gastrointestinal discomfort, anxiety, and immune vulnerability. While the science is still developing, providing dogs with diverse, minimally processed diets and minimizing unnecessary antibiotic use are welfare-positive practices supported by emerging evidence.
