Lighting programs in poultry production affect bird health, behavior, and welfare profoundly, with evidence-based programs improving outcomes far beyond conventional industry practice.
Lighting is a frequently overlooked but significant determinant of poultry welfare. Near-continuous bright light in conventional broiler production promotes continuous feeding but disrupts the circadian rhythms that regulate physiology, immunity, and behavioral rest cycles. Deprived of darkness for adequate rest, birds develop chronic fatigue-related health problems. Improved lighting programs — providing adequate dark periods, appropriate light intensity, and in some systems natural daylight access — improve health outcomes, reduce leg problems, and allow birds to express natural activity cycles. These improvements are achievable without major capital investment.
