Captive groups are necessarily much smaller than wild troops, which can alter social dynamics in ways that increase aggression. Male mandrills are formidable animals with large canines, and inadequate space or inappropriate group compositions lead to serious injuries. Best-practice facilities maintain stable groups with appropriate male-female ratios, provide large foraging areas with substrate enrichment, and carefully manage social introductions. The dramatic visual complexity of mandrills makes them excellent ambassador species for Central African conservation education when appropriately housed.
