Spectacled caimans are the most common crocodilian in the Americas and relatively common in zoo collections, but their welfare needs are often underestimated.
Captive caimans require carefully managed temperature gradients, UV-B exposure, and deep water areas for proper welfare. Malnutrition is common when feeding schedules are insufficiently adapted to seasonal behavioral changes. Housing multiple individuals together without adequate space and refuges causes aggression and injury. Their sensitivity to sound and vibration means proximity to high-traffic zoo areas causes chronic low-grade stress. Enrichment should include submerged hides and live prey feeding opportunities.
