Hamsters are one of the world's most popular small pets, yet research consistently shows that standard commercial hamster housing fails to meet their behavioral needs.
Most commercially available hamster cages sold in pet stores are severely inadequate by welfare science standards. Hamsters in undersized enclosures develop bar-chewing, repetitive running, and other stereotypies that indicate chronic frustration. Many owners are unaware that their hamster shows signs of poor welfare because these behaviors are often described as normal. Providing adequate space, deep substrate, and large running wheels dramatically improves behavioral wellbeing. Pet industry standards need to be updated to reflect current scientific knowledge.
