Heat stroke causes intense suffering including disorientation, seizures, and multi-organ failure before death. Most cases are entirely preventable through simple owner education. Despite well-publicized warnings, dogs continue to die in hot cars every summer due to owner complacency or misjudgment about car heating rates. Dogs forced to exercise on hot days without adequate cooling suffer heat exhaustion that can progress rapidly to stroke. Flat-faced breeds are physiologically incapable of adequate cooling and require extra vigilance in warm weather. Early cooling and emergency veterinary care within minutes of sign onset is the only life-saving intervention.
