Barn owls are in decline across much of their range due to prey loss, road mortality, and loss of nest sites. Simple interventions can make a significant difference.
Individual barn owls that collide with vehicles suffer acute trauma causing fractures, head injury, and death. Owls weakened by food shortage during severe winters are at highest risk of road strikes as they hunt closer to roads where small mammals are more accessible. Rodenticide exposure through secondary poisoning from farm pest control causes sub-lethal effects including behavioral impairment that may increase collision risk. Loss of rough grassland habitat forces owls to hunt in smaller, less productive areas causing chronic food stress. Individual welfare harms aggregate to population-level decline when habitat quality is insufficient across entire landscapes.
