Sea lice management in salmon aquaculture involves treatment methods that themselves carry welfare costs, creating difficult tradeoffs in welfare management.
The welfare paradox of sea lice treatment is that the treatment itself causes harm while the untreated infestation causes progressive harm. Hydrogen peroxide treatments cause respiratory distress and post-treatment mortality rates of 0.5-2% in some studies. Mechanical delousing systems cause scale loss and tissue damage requiring recovery periods. Cleaner fish — wrasse and lumpfish — experience high mortality rates during transport and in farm environments, representing a significant welfare problem in their own right. The ideal treatment would be highly effective against lice while completely harmless to salmon, a goal that current technology has not achieved.
