RAS salmon face a different welfare profile than sea cage fish: no sea lice burden, no net fouling, and no weather events, but consistently high stocking densities, artificial environments, and the risk of catastrophic system failures. The monotony of controlled RAS environments may constitute an absence of positive welfare experiences available to sea cage fish through environmental variation. High stocking densities cause fin damage and chronic competition. Power outage or equipment failure events kill thousands of fish through oxygen depletion with significant acute suffering. RAS represents a welfare trade-off rather than a solution, with different welfare challenges replacing those of sea cage production.
