The development of validated welfare assessment tools for broilers has transformed the field by enabling objective measurement of previously subjective welfare states. Cognitive bias testing — where birds in poor welfare conditions interpret ambiguous stimuli more pessimistically — provides a direct behavioral measure of subjective experience. This evidence supports the view that broilers have rich enough inner lives to suffer from their conditions in morally significant ways. Welfare genomics offers the prospect of breeding birds whose biology is compatible with good welfare rather than requiring welfare measures to compensate for genetic predispositions to disease. The translation of research findings into commercial practice remains the primary challenge.
