CDS in cats causes genuine confusion and distress, particularly during nighttime disorientation episodes that may involve prolonged vocalization. Many families interpret CDS signs as stubbornness, anxiety, or simple aging rather than disease, delaying diagnosis and treatment. The progressive nature of CDS means that early environmental adaptation provides more benefit than intervention after significant progression. Nightlights, consistent routines, and familiar scent enrichment reduce disorientation episodes. The human-animal bond makes watching CDS progression emotionally challenging for families, sometimes leading to euthanasia decisions based more on family distress than on the cat's actual quality of life, which may remain reasonable with appropriate management.
