Researching wolverines creates inherent welfare tension: the knowledge gained from capture-and-collar studies improves conservation outcomes, but wolverines respond with extreme stress to capture events. Trap checking intervals, anesthesia protocols, and collar weight limits are welfare-critical parameters. Non-invasive methods — hair snares for genetic sampling, camera traps, snow tracking — are preferred wherever possible but provide less precise data. The welfare of research animals must be balanced against the population-level benefits of the knowledge gained.
