The science of pig enrichment is one of the most practically developed areas of farm animal welfare research, yet the translation from evidence to practice remains deeply inadequate. The research is clear: pigs need complex, manipulable materials that allow rooting and foraging behavior, and conventional plastic toys or chains fail this test despite their ubiquitous presence in commercial farms. Straw bedding provides effective enrichment and reduces tail biting, which would eliminate the need for tail docking — itself a painful procedure performed to prevent the welfare problem caused by inadequate enrichment. The circular logic of: enrichment-deprived pigs bite tails, so we dock tails, is a classic example of addressing symptoms rather than causes. The industry resistance to straw bedding is primarily about slurry management systems that are incompatible with substrate — an engineering problem solvable with investment.
