Farm animal welfare has historically focused on reducing suffering. The positive welfare framework asks a more demanding question: can farm animals experience genuinely good lives?
The positive welfare framework represents a significant advance in how animal welfare is conceptualized and measured. Rather than asking only whether animals are suffering, it asks whether they have the opportunity to experience positive states — curiosity, play, social bonding, satisfying behavioral expression. This is a more demanding standard that most farm animals currently fail to meet. The practical implication is that absence of observable suffering is insufficient — welfare requires active provision of conditions enabling positive experience. For farm animals specifically, this means sufficient space for play, social environments that enable normal bonding, environmental complexity enabling exploration and curiosity, and human-animal relationships based on positive interactions rather than fear-based management. Some higher-welfare certified systems are beginning to include positive welfare indicators in their audit criteria.
