The science of fish welfare has advanced rapidly in the past two decades, establishing robust evidence for fish pain and stress that is reshaping aquaculture standards globally.
The scientific consensus on fish pain and consciousness has shifted dramatically since the early 2000s. What was once dismissed as reflexive behavior is now understood as involving neural and behavioral complexity consistent with pain experience. This has profound implications for aquaculture welfare: production practices developed with the assumption that fish cannot suffer must be re-evaluated against an evidence base that strongly suggests they can. The practical challenge is translating welfare science into industry standards when fish are produced in volumes making individual animal assessment impractical. Population-level welfare indicators — mortality rates, behavior surveys, feed conversion efficiency — provide scalable monitoring approaches. The pace of welfare science advancement has outrun regulatory progress in most jurisdictions.
