The dancing bear campaign in India represents one of the most successful welfare interventions in recent wildlife history. Dancing bears lived with rings through their noses, trained through pain from infancy, worked in begging performances, and lived in chronic physical and psychological distress. Wildlife SOS systematically rescued bears while providing economic alternatives to the Kalandar communities whose livelihoods depended on the practice — a model of welfare advocacy that addressed root causes rather than just symptoms. The sanctuary care provided to rescued bears demonstrates that former dancing bears can recover substantial quality of life. Ongoing sloth bear welfare concerns now center on habitat protection and human-wildlife conflict management that keep wild bears alive and able to express natural behavior.
