This is not a simple welfare calculus: reducing deer numbers through culling imposes direct welfare costs on managed individuals while preventing the chronic welfare compromise of malnutrition and disease in overpopulated herds. The welfare of the forest ecosystem — including the many species that depend on intact understory — is a legitimate welfare consideration. Management methods vary considerably in their per-animal welfare impacts: sharpshooting by trained professionals is among the most humane options, while trap-and-euthanize programs or poorly executed hunting practices impose higher welfare costs.
