Cheetahs are the world fastest land animals but one of Africa most threatened big cats. Human-wildlife conflict and habitat loss are primary welfare and conservation challenges.
Cheetah welfare in the wild is compromised by the combined effects of habitat loss forcing them into agricultural landscapes where conflict mortality is high, competition with larger predators like lions and leopards, and the physiological vulnerabilities associated with extremely low genetic diversity. Individual cheetahs involved in livestock depredation face capture, killing, or removal to facilities. Community-based conservation programs that address the economic drivers of conflict — livestock losses — through compensation schemes and livestock guardian dog programs are the most effective coexistence approaches. Captive cheetahs in welfare-compromising conditions at tourist facilities and private collections represent an additional welfare concern requiring regulatory attention.
