Red foxes have successfully colonized urban environments globally. Managing human-fox coexistence humanely requires understanding fox behavior and addressing public attitudes.
Urban red fox welfare encompasses both the welfare of individual foxes and the management of human-fox conflict. Foxes with untreated sarcoptic mange experience significant suffering from intense pruritus, secondary skin infection, and progressive debilitation — mange treatment programs have been successfully implemented by wildlife charities in some UK cities. Urban foxes that access gardens and disturb bins cause frustration but not genuine harm, yet can be subjected to lethal control through legal or illegal methods. Non-lethal deterrents including securing food waste and deterrent sprays are effective at modifying problematic behaviors without causing welfare harm. Cubs born in urban areas are particularly vulnerable to vehicle collision, dog attack, and well-intentioned human interference.
