IVDD is the most common neurological disease in dogs. Breed awareness, weight management, and prompt veterinary care dramatically improve welfare outcomes.
IVDD causes acute and often severe welfare harm through both pain from disc herniation and the neurological deficits that accompany spinal cord compression. The acute onset can be traumatic for owners to witness — dogs may cry in pain, refuse to move, or suddenly lose hindlimb function. The welfare case for prompt surgical intervention is strong — decompressive surgery within 48 hours of onset provides the best functional outcome and the fastest pain relief. For dogs that are surgical candidates, delaying for financial or logistical reasons worsens prognosis and prolongs suffering. Prevention through weight management, appropriate exercise modification in high-risk breeds, and ramps instead of stairs reduces the risk of acute disc events. Genetic testing and breeding selection in Dachshunds and other high-risk breeds is beginning to reduce hereditary IVDD prevalence.
