Insect slaughter welfare is determined by both the probability that insects can experience suffering and the duration and intensity of any nociceptive process during slaughter. Given the uncertainty about insect sentience, the precautionary approach is to prefer methods that minimize duration of potential nociception — rapid methods with prior cold anesthesia may represent the most welfare-compatible current option. Cold anesthesia before slaughter appears to induce insensibility before lethal thermal or mechanical damage is applied, potentially providing welfare benefit if insects can experience the intermediate states. The economic cost of implementing more welfare-compatible slaughter methods in the insect industry is relatively low compared to vertebrate food production, making this an achievable welfare improvement at modest cost. Industry adoption of precautionary welfare slaughter standards would be an important signal of responsible development.
