RAS salmon production offers genuine welfare advantages through the elimination of sea lice infestation — one of the most significant chronic welfare problems in conventional open net-pen farming. The ability to control water temperature, oxygen, and quality parameters precisely also allows optimization for fish welfare in ways that are impossible in open sea cage systems exposed to environmental variation. However, the economic model of RAS farming tends toward high stocking densities that can create crowding stress, and system redundancy failures can cause rapid welfare emergencies. The overall welfare profile of RAS versus open net-pen farming depends heavily on specific management practices and stocking densities. As the technology matures and capital costs decline, RAS has the potential to become the higher-welfare default for Atlantic salmon aquaculture.
