Geese are farmed for meat, down, and liver products worldwide. Foie gras production using force-feeding is among the most recognized animal welfare controversies in food production.
Goose welfare covers multiple significant issues. Force-feeding for foie gras causes liver enlargement to 6-10 times normal size, esophageal damage, and difficulty standing and breathing — a condition recognized as severe suffering by veterinary consensus in countries that have banned the practice. Beyond foie gras, geese farmed for meat need access to water for behavioral needs comparable to ducks. Live plucking for down — practiced in some producing countries — causes pain and is inhumane. Responsible down sourcing certification (Responsible Down Standard) prohibits live plucking and requires humane treatment standards.
