Goat meat production is widespread globally but receives less welfare attention than cattle, pigs, or poultry. Understanding goat welfare needs improves standards in a largely unregulated sector.
Goat welfare across global production systems varies enormously — from extensive pastoral systems where goats face weather extremes and predation to intensive indoor systems where they may lack behavioral opportunities. In extensive systems, drought causes severe nutritional stress; in intensive systems, disease pressure and social stress are greater. Goats are often kept with minimal veterinary oversight and welfare standards because they are perceived as hardy low-value animals. Their intelligence and social complexity mean that environmental impoverishment causes behavioral problems. Basic welfare improvements include access to fresh water, shade, appropriate shelter, social companionship, and prompt disease treatment — achievable standards that remain unmet in much of global goat production.
