Wild salmon face numerous welfare challenges from ocean conditions to spawning migration hazards. Conservation efforts that reduce these stressors improve both welfare and population viability.
Wild salmon welfare encompasses both the acute suffering of individual fish and the population-level conservation threats that reduce the number of salmon able to complete their life cycle. Individual welfare concerns include the extreme physical demands of spawning migration — tissue degradation, energy depletion, and injury are intrinsic to the species' remarkable biology. Added anthropogenic stressors including dam barriers, water temperature elevation, sea lice spillover from fish farms, and fishing mortality create additional welfare impacts beyond evolutionary baseline. Removing dams, restoring riparian habitat, controlling fish farm lice, and managing fishing pressure are all welfare interventions with measurable population and individual benefit.
