Dust bathing is an intensely motivated natural behavior in chickens and other poultry. Its provision is not a luxury but a fundamental welfare requirement.
The welfare significance of dust bathing is demonstrated by the motivation intensity birds show to access substrate. Hens in litter-free environments perform sham dust bathing in the air — a vacuum behavior that is itself an indicator of welfare deprivation. The drive to dust bathe is so strong that it cannot simply be engineered away through selective breeding or management. Litter quality in indoor systems is the critical management factor: wet, compacted litter does not allow effective dust bathing even when technically present. Deep, dry, loose litter that allows full dust bathing expression is the welfare standard. Battery cage and many enriched colony systems that prevent dust bathing cause significant behavioral frustration that contributes to overall negative welfare states.
