Crowding stress in farmed salmon is one of the most tractable welfare improvements available to the aquaculture industry. The relationship between stocking density and welfare outcomes is well-documented: above threshold densities, stress hormones rise, immune function declines, fin damage increases, and growth efficiency paradoxically decreases. The welfare and economic interests are therefore more aligned than they might first appear — optimal welfare-density stocking improves growth and reduces disease, partially offsetting the cost of reduced stocking density. Consumer-facing certification programs that specify maximum stocking density provide market incentives for adoption. Regulatory standards setting evidence-based maximum densities below current legal maximums would have the largest welfare impact.
