The slaughter of farmed rainbow trout without prior stunning causes significant suffering. Pre-slaughter stunning methods are available and increasingly required by regulations.
Pre-slaughter trout welfare is a clear case where welfare improvement is technically feasible and economically manageable but not yet universally adopted. Asphyxiation in ice water — the dominant slaughter method globally — results in conscious death taking minutes, during which trout show vigorous escape behavior reflecting acute distress. Percussive stunning applied correctly renders fish immediately unconscious — a transformative welfare improvement over asphyxiation. Electrical stunning in water bath systems also achieves rapid unconsciousness. The barrier to adoption is primarily capital cost for equipment and training requirements rather than technical feasibility. Regulatory requirements and consumer-facing certification demanding pre-slaughter stunning are the most effective drivers of adoption. The scale of trout production means even modest improvements in stunning rates affect millions of animals.
