The impact of refinement discoveries is enormous given the scale of animal research globally. Tunnel handling for mice — allowing mice to voluntarily enter handling tubes rather than being scruffed — reduces stress markers and produces more scientifically consistent results, creating alignment between welfare and research quality. Voluntary cooperation training for blood sampling, administration of compounds, and examination eliminates restraint stress across species including non-human primates, rodents, and rabbits. Analgesic coverage for surgical procedures is now standard in high-welfare institutions but still inconsistently applied globally. Regulatory enforcement of refinement requirements and support for NC3Rs and similar refinement research bodies drive continued improvement.
