Channel catfish are one of the most important aquaculture species in the United States, and their welfare in pond and intensive systems depends on careful water quality and density management.
Catfish welfare in aquaculture receives relatively little scientific or regulatory attention compared to salmon or trout, despite the large scale of US and global production. Water quality management is the most important welfare determinant: ammonia and dissolved oxygen levels significantly affect physiological stress. High stocking densities drive disease outbreaks that cause substantial suffering. At slaughter, catfish are typically dispatched without effective stunning. Consumer pressure for welfare standards and regulatory attention to catfish slaughter methods would address the most significant welfare problems in this sector.
