Refinement — one of the 3Rs principles — focuses on minimizing pain, suffering, and distress in animals used for scientific research, and advances in refinement techniques have substantially improved laboratory animal welfare.
Laboratory animal welfare has improved substantially through refinement advances, but significant welfare challenges remain. Pain management, environmental enrichment, appropriate social housing, and trained observation are all refinement tools that reduce suffering without compromising research. Regulatory frameworks in Europe, the US, and other regions require refinement consideration, but implementation varies. Consumer and public pressure for animal welfare in research, combined with scientific evidence that better welfare improves data quality, continues to drive refinement adoption. Refinement is not an alternative to replacement — both are needed.
